Tow-Lympics Showcase Skills Behind OC’s Freeway Service Patrol

OCTA recently hosted the Freeway Service Patrol (FSP) Tow-Lympics in partnership with the California Highway Patrol, bringing together approximately 60 operators at the Garden Grove Annex Skills Course Training Yard. Held every two years, the event gives FSP drivers an opportunity to demonstrate the precision and expertise required to safely assist stranded motorists on some of Orange County’s busiest freeways.

The friendly competition featured four skill-based courses—Backup Boogie, Jackknife Jamboree, Mirror Check Meltdown, and Wobble and Weave—each designed to highlight critical towing and driving techniques. From precision backing and maneuvering with a vehicle in tow to parallel parking and navigating tight obstacle courses, participants showcased a high level of control and spatial awareness.

Funded in part by Measure M, Orange County’s half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements, the FSP provides free roadside assistance during peak commute hours, helping clear disabled vehicles quickly and reduce congestion.
