Following the passage last year of State Bill 1077, the state was directed to conduct a pilot program to study road charge as a replacement for the gas tax to pay for road maintenance and repairs.
Road charging means that drivers pay to help maintain the roads based on the distance traveled or time used rather than the amount of fuel consumed.
The California Transportation Commission is looking for volunteers to participate in the road charge pilot program to test new approaches during the summer of 2016. As this potential replacement for the gas tax undergoes further study, pilot program participants can help by sharing their real-life experiences. Results will be reported to the California Legislature in 2017. To learn more and volunteer or comment, visit here.
