Long a concern of both transportation officials and the public, the first and last mile connection refers to the gap at either end of a public transit trip. If it’s too far to walk and there is no other transportation available, the gap can discourage people from riding public transportation.
In the May 9 issue of Metro, a leading transportation industry publication, OCTA CEO discussed how OCTA is bridging the gap and encouraging community connectivity with the help of Measure M, Orange County’s half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements.
Johnson provided two examples of connectivity. The planned OC Streetcar, the first modern electric streetcar in the densest part of the county, will connect passengers to commuter rail and Orange County’s busiest bus lines. And this summer, OCTA will enhance its mobile bus app to link riders directly to Lyft and other service providers to make that last-mile link easier.
