Explore OC’s Protected Wilderness with a Family-Friendly Hike & Activities

On June 9, OCTA will host a special free event for Orange County’s youngest residents and their families at the beautiful Trabuco Rose Preserve. Children can create nature-related crafts, learn about the surrounding protected lands, and enjoy a mild hike that’s fit for feet of all sizes!

All ages are welcome and activities are appropriate for children ages 4 and over. No strollers are permitted on the trail. All participants are required to sign a liability waiver and minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The short and easy hike is a ½ mile one way. For those who want to trek the full-loop trail, the moderate hike is about two miles.

The Trabuco Rose Preserve is a 396-acre parcel located northwest of the City of Rancho Santa Margarita in Trabuco Canyon. It’s bordered by the Cleveland National Forest to the north and Trabuco Creek to the south, while Hickey Creek drains the western side. The Preserve features rolling terrain with elevations ranging from 1,120 to 1,650 feet above mean sea level.

OCTA’s acquisition of the property allows this core segment of the Trabuco Canyon area to be permanently protected and ensures the preservation of high-quality habitat and mobility for wildlife into the Cleveland National Forest.

The preserve is one of seven properties purchased by OCTA as part of the OC Go Environmental Mitigation Program, a comprehensive plan that preserves and restores natural habitats and allows for expedited delivery of freeway projects. The properties are located in Trabuco Canyon, Brea, Silverado Canyon, and Laguna Beach. Together, they total more than 1,300 acres. OC Go is the new name of Measure M, Orange County’s half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements.

Space is limited, and OCTA’s family hikes fill up quickly. For more information and to register, click here.
