Orange County and OCTA Celebrate Black History Month and the Lunar New Year

Thousands of community members visited OCTA information booths for in-person outdoor celebrations commemorating Black History Month and the Lunar New Year.

On February 5, OCTA participated in the Black History Month Parade and Unity Festival organized by the Orange County Heritage Council in downtown Anaheim with a colorful booth celebrating the past contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks and Maya Angelou and highlighting the current service of the agency's diverse employees.

During the all-day event, participants learned about construction of the OC Streetcar and the widening of I-405 freeway. They also shared their feedback on ways to enhance transportation in Orange County. OCTA Directors Doug Chaffee, Katrina Foley and Vicente Sarmiento and their team members participated in the festivities and visited the OCTA booth along with hundreds of others.

OCTA also had a large presence at the two Tet festivals with information and activity booths to usher in the Lunar New Year of the Tiger.

During the O.C. Tet Festival at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley, Friday, Feb. 4 to Sunday, Feb. 6 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., revelers got a chance to meet and take photos with OCTA's new cultural ambassadors Loan Chau and Justin Nguyen who performed beloved traditional Vietnamese and English pop songs.

OCTA Directors Doug Chaffee, Patrick Harper and Andrew Do joined thousands of Orange County residents to visit the OCTA booth where information was available on capital projects and planning studies as well as surveys on the future of transit options.

OCTA also participated at the Tet Festival at the O.C. Fair and Event Center in Costa Mesa where Loan Chau performed at the cultural village with Vanessa Hong-Van Nguyen, another OCTA cultural ambassador. OCTA Directors Patrick Harper and Katrina Foley paid visits to the well-stocked OCTA booth at this location.

In addition, in January CEO Darrell Johnson attended a Lunar New Year event in Garden Grove, along with OCTA Directors Steve Jones and Tam Nguyen, to celebrate the new year and welcome the year of the tiger.
