April Marks Distracted Driving Awareness Month

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, a reminder that staying focused behind the wheel helps protect everyone on the road.

According to the 2025 California Statewide Public Opinion Survey, more than 70% of California drivers say distracted driving, especially texting or checking a phone, is their top safety concern.

The Seal Beach Police Department is urging drivers to stay alert and follow California’s hands-free cell phone law, which prohibits holding a phone or electronic device while driving, even at a red light. Violations can result in fines and, for repeat offenses, points added to a driver’s record.

Safety experts, including AAA, emphasize simple steps to reduce distractions:

  • Put your phone out of reach or set it to “Do Not Disturb While Driving”
  • Set navigation, mirrors, and controls before starting your trip
  • Avoid eating, grooming, or reaching for items while driving
  • Ask passengers to help with directions or calls
  • Pull over safely if something requires your attention

While these habits can help, one of the most effective ways to avoid distracted driving is to leave the driving to someone else.

OCTA offers convenient and reliable alternatives, including OC Bus, Metrolink, and OC Vanpool services. Public transportation allows riders to stay productive, relax, or simply enjoy the trip—without the stress of traffic or the risk of distractions.
