Working with Police to Keep Cyclists, Pedestrians Safe

In beautiful, busy Orange County, sharing the road is an expected part of travel on many roadways. Yet when cars, bikes, and pedestrians occupy the same street, sometimes they come together in harmful and unfortunate ways.

As part of its innovative Partnerships with Police (PWP) project, OCTA is meeting with police during morning briefings to share information that may help reduce crashes. The concise presentation is tailored for officers and provides insights on the most common behaviors leading to bike and pedestrian crashes in Orange County while also covering new and relevant laws related to walking and biking. This knowledge helps officers understand which public behaviors to focus on during enforcement.

Police Departments participating in the program include Placentia, La Habra, Newport Beach, Anaheim, Santa Ana, Irvine, and Orange. OCTA has shared PWP with 143 officers with five more presentations scheduled. The program is funded by the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG).
