Letting the Public Know
The largest project in OCTA’s history, the I-405 Improvement Project will improve 16 miles of I-405 and add one regular lane in each direction from Euclid Street to I-605. It will also construct the 405 Express Lanes from SR-73 to I-605. This is the second in a series that reports on what’s happening behind the scenes.
In February, a postcard mailed to more than 200,000 addresses in Seal Beach, Westminster, Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, Costa Mesa, the Community of Rossmoor, portions of Long Beach, Garden Grove and Irvine encouraged residents and business owners to sign up for the project database and follow the 405 Project on social media.
In March, OCTA provided updates to Emergency & Medical Services (EMS) providers, including fire, police, CHP, sheriff, hospitals, and ambulance companies from every corridor city and surrounding areas. OCTA meets with this group quarterly or as needed to provide an open forum to gather input on plans and detours. This collaboration will enable more efficient communications about construction activities so EMS providers can safely and quickly respond in emergency situations.
In addition, door-to-door visits to the more than 11,000 businesses along the project corridor have begun to offer project and contact information and gather information about individual businesses. OCTA recently briefed representatives from Cal State Long Beach, South Bay Pavilion Mall, Costa Mesa Travel, Destination Irvine (part of the Irvine Chamber of Commerce), the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce, and St. Mary’s Medical Center in Long Beach.
The I-405 Improvement Project will last approximately six years with construction beginning in late 2017. The 405 Express Lanes are anticipated to open in early 2023.
