OCTA and its project partners will soon begin preparing for the State Route 91 Corridor Improvement Project (also known as “The 91 Project”) that will significantly improve an 8-mile stretch of Route 91 between Interstate 15 and the Orange-Riverside County line.
The project entails extending the tolled 91 Express Lanes in Orange County to the I-15, adding a continuous general-purpose lane in each direction and building additional lanes in particularly busy areas. Besides adding lanes, seven interchanges will be rebuilt, and a sweeping elevated ramp will conveniently drop northbound I-15 commuters directly onto new westbound 91 Express Lanes.
Though full construction won’t start until 2014, crews will be conducting land surveys and taking soil samples on the SR-91 and I-15 during off-peak travel hours. Travelers can expect temporary lane closures and need to follow the signs be stay alert.
Safety is the highest priority, so commuters are urged to:
- Slow down and watch for workers and heavy equipment
- Allow extra time to get where they are going
- Tell friends and customers about pre-construction activity
- Take extra care when driving at night and during inclement weather
- Avoid mobile phone use and other distractions
- Watch for lane and ramp closures; use alternate routes and follow detours
- Obey the “Move Over” law. This law requires travelers to move to lanes away from any construction work when it is safe to do so.
This is a short-term inconvenience for a long-term traffic solution. Learn more at www.sr91project.info.
