Stay Safe as Daylight Saving Time Ends

On Sunday, Nov. 3, Californians will set their clocks back one hour, marking the end of Daylight Saving Time. As evening commutes become darker, safety becomes a priority for both motorists and pedestrians. The Automobile Club of Southern California offers these tips to help everyone stay safe.

Motorists:

· Adjust your driving habits to account for reduced visibility and be vigilant for children and pedestrians who may be harder to see, especially during the first weeks after the time change.

· As sunset occurs progressively earlier until the December 21 winter solstice, be mindful of unexpected glare from the setting sun. Keep sunglasses handy and adjust visors as necessary. To mitigate glare from oncoming headlights, use the night setting on your rearview mirror.

· Regularly check that all vehicle lights are functioning properly. Always use your headlights, even during the day, and remember to turn them off at the end of your trip.

Pedestrians:

· Prioritize visibility: Make sure drivers can see you clearly to help prevent accidents.

· Make eye contact with drivers when crossing streets to ensure they see you.

· Wear bright or reflective clothing at night to enhance visibility.

· Carry a flashlight when walking or walking pets after dark.

· Stick to sidewalks whenever possible. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing oncoming traffic to stay aware of vehicles.
