San Clemente Group Gets Update on I-5 South County Project

Members of a local business organization got an update on the Interstate 5 (I-5) South County Project last week when the OCTA project team met with them to discuss the three-part improvement that affects San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, and Dana Point.

Through a presentation including a Powerpoint overview and a question and answer session, The San Clemente Exchange Club learned about the 5.7-mile project that extends from Avenida Pico in San Clemente to San Juan Creek Road in San Juan Capistrano. To view the Powerpoint, click here.

Funded by Measure M, the county’s half-cent sales tax for transportation, the $249 million I-5 South County Project will ease traffic congestion and improve safety and traffic flow along the I-5, a vital north-south route for all of southern California. In 2009, approximately 8,870 vehicles traveled south of San Juan Creek Road in the peak afternoon hour, and by 2040 that will increase to approximately 11,050 vehicles per hour if the project is not completed.

The project includes three segments: San Juan Creek Road to Pacific Coast Highway, Pacific Coast Highway to Vista Hermosa, and Vista Hermosa to Avenida Pico. Construction is underway and the project is expected to be completed in 2017.
