Though Bike Month officially begins in May, OCTA will jumpstart the fun early with safe cycling classes at OCTA headquarters in Orange on April 24 and 25. Called Cycling Savvy, the comprehensive course is taught in three, three-hour segments and includes a bike-handling session, a classroom session, and an on-road tour. Sign-ups are required and the cost is $75 for the entire course.
To promote active transportation safety and awareness, OCTA is providing its facilities for the classroom and skills portions of the course and has partnered with the Orange County Bicycle Coalition and the OC Wheelmen, Orange County’s largest cycling club, who will serve as instructors for the course.
Next up is the Bike Festival in Huntington Beach on April 26. During the free event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., there will be free bike helmets for the kids (while supplies last), a bicycle safety course led by the Huntington Beach Police Department, loads of vendors and entertainment by the BMX stunt team.
The popular OCTA Bike Rally featuring a ride from the Orange Metrolink Station to OCTA headquarters kicks off May 7 at 7:30 a.m. Anyone who joins the group will get a free Bike Month t-shirt.
Riders who want to explore the new Jeffrey Open Space Trail will get their chance on May 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during a guided group ride. Family-friendly activities at the trailhead at Cypress Community Park in Irvine include bicycle safety education, food trucks, and prizes.
Those who pledge to ride their bikes during May will be entered into a drawing to win a coupon to Jax Bicycle Center. Many Orange County residents have pledged and committed to ride more 2,380 so far.
