Caltrans and OCTA are progressing toward the environmental phase of plans to improve the San Diego Freeway (I-5) between the San Joaquin Hills Toll Road (SR-73) and El Toro Road.

Officials released the draft initial study / environmental assessment report on Sept. 6. The environmental document considers the effects associated with proposed transportation alternatives for the busy stretch of I-5 in southern Orange County.

The document is available for public review and comment through Oct. 7 on Caltrans’ website www.dot.ca.gov/dist12/files/5widening

Public members may submit their comments before Oct. 7 by email at D12.5Widening@dot.ca.gov or by mail to:

Transportation officials invite residents and commuters to a public hearing from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25 at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center at 24932 Veterans Way in Mission Viejo.

Alternatives include adding one general purpose lane in each direction, adding two general purpose lanes in each direction or a no-build alternative.

Approximately 358,000 daily motorists travel the I-5 between the El Toro Road and the SR-73. Transportation planners expect traffic volumes to increase 25 percent by 2045.

Caltrans and OCTA are proposing to widen the freeway to improve travel conditions for drivers.
