A public hearing on the proposed widening of the San Diego Freeway (I-5) between the San Joaquin Hills Toll Road (SR-73) and El Toro Road will be in August, an Orange County Transportation Authority outreach team member shared with members of the San Juan Capistrano City Council on Tuesday, July 16.
The improvement project proposes to add additional carpool and general purpose lanes in both directions on I-5 between SR-73 in Laguna Niguel and El Toro Road in Lake Forest, OCTA project engineer Hamid Torkamanha and Outreach Specialist Ryan Romeos shared with the City Council.
OCTA's outreach team are inviting members of the public to participate in the public hearing from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 28 at Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way in Mission Viejo.
San Juan Capistrano City Council members asked how the project would meld with another OCTA project that will add carpool lanes between Avenida Pico and San Juan Creek Road. Torkamanha told city officials both projects were planned together.
In addition to the increased freeway capacity, the proposed project also will make major improvements to the La Paz road in Laguna Hills and Avery parkway interchanges in Mission Viejo.
Torkamanha said the planned work at Avery Parkway will be comparable to the Ortega highway interchange improvements in San Juan Capistrano now underway.
The council members said tthey appreciated the briefing on the proposed project, which would be next to San Juan Capistrano's northern boundary.
