A roundtable discussion about bikeways planning in Supervisorial District 5 last week attracted more than 25 enthusiastic participants who expressed their thoughts about creating a more bike-friendly community in south Orange County.
District 5 includes Aliso Viejo, Dana Point, Irvine, Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, Lake Forest, Mission Viejo, Ranch Santa Margarita, San Clemente, and San Juan Capistrano.
OCTA joined the Orange County Council of Governments, Caltrans, County of Orange and participating agencies in examining ways to improve regional connectivity for bicycling in southern Orange County. Nine regional priority bikeways were identified. Download potential bikeways maps (PDF). To increase public participation in the decision-making process, OCTA has created an online survey that lets viewers rank the nine proposed corridors.
The regional bikeways will be evaluated using the following criteria: trip demand, level of traffic stress, safety factor, completes the corridor, completes the network, public support, constraints, slope, and economic efficiency. For a full description of each element, please download the District 5 Bikeways Collaborative Draft Prioritization Criteria (PDF).
Another District 5 Bikeways Planning Roundtable will be held in the fall.
