OCTA offers one of the few programs in the nation designed to give service animals and their handlers experience riding public transportation. Last month, 320 trainers and their service animals gathered at the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC) to take part in this paws-on training event.
Starting at ARTIC, participants rode OCTA buses for free throughout Anaheim, stopping at the Downtown Disney District to give service animals valuable practice adapting to busy environments and gaining more experience boarding the bus. The experience helps service animals become comfortable with the movement, noises, and activity of public transit, ensuring they are confident and prepared to assist their handlers in daily life.
Trainers and service animals traveled from across the nation to take part, representing organizations such as Go Team Therapy Dogs, Guide Dogs for the Blind, VFR Veterans & First Responders, and Canine Companions.
For over 30 years, OCTA has supported the training of thousands of service animals, enabling individuals with disabilities gain greater independence and access to public transportation in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The next Service Animal Training Day will be held in spring 2026.
