Transportation officials will gather in San Juan Capistrano Wednesday, Jan. 29 to kick off construction on a project that will “whip congestion” on a vital stretch of the San Diego Freeway (I-5).
The ceremony at 2 p.m. Jan. 29 will officially mark the start of construction on a $260-million project that will add carpool lanes between San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano, to relieve congestion in a notorious south Orange County traffic bottleneck.
The project is funded by Measure M, the county’s half-cent sales tax approved by Orange County voters.
At the ceremony, an O.C. Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol will present colors, while champion whip cracker Leslie Leone will “whip traffic congestion” to ceremonially launch the construction project.
