OCTA supports Orange County commuters with a variety of cost-saving transportation options. For commuters who travel long distances, vanpooling may be the most cost-effective solution.
A vanpool is a group of people who share the cost of commuting by riding together in a vehicle leased through one of OCTA’s vanpool vendors. Vehicle sizes range from 7 to 15 seat vans. The group divides the cost of gas, tolls, car washes, parking and the van lease, which includes maintenance and insurance. Sharing the costs reduces the commuting expenses for each rider. As an added benefit, vanpools can use the carpool lanes.
The OCTA vanpool program offers a $400 monthly subsidy for each qualified vanpool, enhancing the cost savings for riders even more. There are currently more than 450 vans in the program.
Commuters interested in joining a vanpool can register online and add their information to OCTA’s database. They can then search for open vanpools, contact vanpool coordinators or contact their fellow employees to start a vanpool.
