OCTA’s Biggest Project Wraps Successful Year While Moving Forward

The I-405 Improvement Project, which is improving a 16-mile stretch of the freeway between Costa Mesa and the Orange County border with Los Angeles County, is the largest project in OCTA’s history. More than one thousand workers are involved in the project each day.

During 2021, the project continued moving forward with an anticipated completion date of 2023.

Accomplishments in 2021 included opening four bridges – Talbert Avenue, Magnolia Street, Edwards Street and Edinger Avenue – with Bolsa Chica bridge phase 2 and Heil Pedestrian bridge expected to be open by the end of the year. A total of 18 bridges are being replaced and widened as part of the project.

In addition, OCTA reset the interest rate to 1.95 percent on its $629 million federal loan for the I-405 Improvement Project. This first-of-its-kind reset will help save an additional $158 million over the life of the loan.
