Two projects aimed at reducing congestion, easing traffic flows and improving safety on two major South County roadways recently received county approval.

The Orange County Transportation Authority plans to synchronize traffic signals along Antonio Parkway and Crown Valley Parkway. The Board of Supervisors has approved both projects, including partnerships with area cities.

The Antonio Parkway project will affect 25 signals over 10 miles, from Ortega Highway to Santa Margarita Parkway. Rancho Santa Margarita and surrounding unincorporated areas – including Ladera Ranch, Coto de Caza and Rancho Mission Viejo – will all benefit from new equipment and signal-timing adjustments.

That three-year project is expected to start in July and cost $1.4 million. The county secured Measure M2 grant funds from OCTA of nearly $1.2 million. The county will match $207,594 for work on the 12 signals in its unincorporated areas. Rancho Santa Margarita will match $81,636 for more minor work needed on its 13 signals, including adding countdowns for pedestrians at crosswalks along Antonio Parkway.

The Crown Valley Parkway work will affect 30 signals over 9 miles, from Pacific Coast Highway to Antonio Parkway. It will include new equipment for Dana Point and Laguna Niguel, plus studying and adjusting signal timing if needed to keep vehicles moving along the parkway in Mission Viejo and Ladera Ranch.

That project is underway and is expected to cost $459,000. Mission Viejo took the lead in applying for grant funds from OCTA to help cover the bill, with all of the affected cities and the county covering their portion of any required matching funds or leftover expenses.
