OCTA Hosts Public Hearing in Long Beach for I-405 Proposed Improvements

Approximately 130 people attended a public hearing Wednesday, July 24 at Hill Classical Middle School in Long Beach to learn and to ask questions about a supplemental traffic study for the proposed San Diego Freeway (I-405) Improvement Project.

During the first part of the meeting, members of the public, along with OCTA Director and Seal Beach Mayor Gary Miller, visited different stations with informational boards and team members addressing specific topics about the project, including new traffic information relevant to the Long Beach area.

The second part of the meeting featured a presentation by the project’s consultant, Kevin Haboian from the engineering firm of Parsons.

Haboian shared information about the need for the proposed project that would widen a 14-mile area of I-405 between the Corona del Mar Freeway (SR-73) and the San Gabriel River Freeway (I-605).

The presentation also focused on the project schedule and the public involvement process for the Draft Environmental Impact Report / Environmental Impact Statement (EIR / EIS) released in May 2012 that included four public hearings conducted in Orange County and community outreach that generated 1,200 letters from the public.

The consultant also provided information about Caltrans’s release of the Supplemental Draft EIR / EIS on June 28 for public review and comments.

Haboian said the supplemental document includes new traffic information relevant to 36 intersections in Long Beach. Members of the public could share their comments and ask questions at the public hearing or send in comment cards, letters or emails through Aug. 12.

During the question-and-answer session, 20 people shared their comments and asked questions. Many community members focused on the traffic impacts to streets and intersections in Long Beach, asked about the decision-making process and voiced their support for Alternative 1, the locally preferred alternative selected by the OCTA board of directors in October 2012.
