OCTA recently hosted the APTA TRANSform Conference, the annual flagship event of the American Public Transportation Association. The conference attracted more than 2,500 attendees, all converging on Anaheim to explore the latest innovations in the industry.
In his opening remarks, OCTA CEO Darrell E. Johnson commented on the crucial role public transportation plays in communities by generating jobs, stimulating economic growth, easing congestion and enhancing air quality. “But there is still more to be done,” Johnson said. “We need to continue to invest in our infrastructure, develop new technologies, and make public transportation more accessible and affordable for everyone.”
He highlighted initiatives that OCTA implemented in Orange County, including the Youth Ride Free and College Pass programs. “Programs like these are setting a new standard for transit equity and helping to foster a culture of sustainable transportation in Orange County,” Johnson said.
OCTA Chair Tam T. Nguyen continued the theme of sustainability by referencing OCTA’s efforts to transition to a 100% zero-emission bus fleet. “With each bus we convert to zero-emission, we reduce emissions and create a healthier environment for everyone, especially in underserved areas that are often most impacted by pollution,” he said.
In addition, Johnson joined other OCTA leaders including Regional Rail Department Manager Kelly Hart, Chief Operating Officer Johnny Dunning, Jr., and Director of Maintenance Cliff Thorne in a panel that showcased how some of OCTA’s forward-thinking transportation projects are redefining mobility and connectivity across the region.
