Metrolink USC Football Express Introduces Riders to the Perks of Train Travel

A special train to a recent USC football game at the L.A. Coliseum not only helped Orange County fans dodge traffic and avoid parking hassles, it also introduced many of them to the benefits of Metrolink travel. On a Thursday night, when many drivers were sitting in rush hour traffic on a crowded freeway, riders on the USC Football Express were comfortably relaxing on a stress-free trip to Los Angeles.

From a travel standpoint, the October 10 game against the Arizona Wildcats had two strikes against it, including limited parking and a prohibitive 7:30 p.m. start time. Neither concerned fans on the special train as they experienced how convenient public transportation can be in southern California.

OCTA looks for opportunities like this to introduce new riders to the benefits of traveling by Metrolink. Follow-up surveys indicate that special promotions attract new riders. A recent Metrolink Weekend Getaway promotion, for example, attracted 4,150 participants – more than half (56 percent) of them first-time Metrolink riders.
