While spending time in historic San Juan Capistrano is great, getting there can be a problem. Traffic congestion at the Interstate 5 (I-5) and Ortega Highway interchange often causes delays and frustration.
Relief is on the way via the I-5 /Ortega Highway Interchange Project, a joint effort among Caltrans, OCTA and the City of San Juan Capistrano to eliminate congestion at this access point into the historic downtown.
To keep stakeholders updated, the Capital Projects Outreach Team met recently with downtown business owners, representatives from the San Juan Capistrano Mission, chamber and city officials, and a representative from the office of OCTA Director Patricia Bates, also the Fifth District Supervisor.
The team provided information on upcoming closures, detours and community outreach efforts for the $86.2 million project, which is currently in the construction phase.
When completed in 2015, the project will ease local traffic and regional commutes and improve safety while maintaining consistency with existing and planned local development.
