Join Cyclists and Pedestrians for a Car-less Experience on LA’s Streets

CicLAvia is returning to Los Angeles on Sun., Oct. 6. The free event, which is expected to draw 100,000 visitors, features miles of car-free streets in the downtown area.

The 7.5-mile Heart of LA CicLAvia route will take participants through the streets of downtown Los Angeles to popular areas including Chinatown, Mariachi Plaza, Little Tokyo, MacArthur Park and more. With the streets closed off to cars, pedestrians and cyclists will be able to travel freely and celebrate healthy commuting.

The concept of ciclovías, which is Spanish for bikeways, started in Columbia during the 1980s as a response to the congestion and pollution of city streets. Thirty years later, similar biking events occur throughout the year in Latin America and the United States.

Streets will be closed to cars and open for pedestrians and cyclists between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Oct. 6. Orange County residents can take Metrolink to Union Station with the $10 Weekend Day Pass.

On Oct. 6, Metrolink trains 661 and 666 will each have two bike cars, which are designed to hold 18 bikes per car. All other Metrolink coach cars can hold three bicycles each. Historically, Metrolink has experienced record bike ridership on CicLAvia weekend. Once the train cars reach capacity, no additional bikes will be allowed. Please arrive at the station early, as space will be limited to a first-come, first-served basis.
