OCTA is moving forward with upgrades that will enhance and improve access to a Metrolink station used by an average of 350 riders each weekday.
At the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo (LN/MV) Metrolink Station, OCTA will replace elevators with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant ramps at the existing pedestrian underpass. The underpass will remain open during construction. The elevator shaft area will be repurposed as a restroom, storage rooms, and vending machine area. In addition, OCTA will build additional passenger shelter areas and add new signage.
The $3.1 million project is currently in the design phase, with construction expected to start early in 2015.
This is the most recent upgrade to the busy station. In October, OCTA opened a new 176-space parking lot. Located just south of the existing lot and built on OCTA-owned property, it increased the number of existing parking spaces at this location to 460.
In addition, OCTA is planning the addition of 1.8 miles of new passing siding railroad track adjacent to the existing main track from the LN/MV Station north of Trabuco Creek in to San Juan Capistrano. The $25.3 million passing siding project will reduce existing congestion at the LNMV Metrolink Station, thereby providing more reliable corridor operations and fewer delays.
