As part of Caltrans’ interchange improvement project in San Juan Capistrano, crews will demolish the south half of the Ortega Highway bridge over the San Diego Freeway (I-5) during a nighttime weekend closure beginning Friday, Aug. 2.
Demolition activities will be under way:
- 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2 through 7 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3
- 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 through 7 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 4
Crews will close both the northbound and southbound I-5 at Ortega Highway, as well as the Ortega Highway bridge over the I-5. While officials expect crews to complete the demolition in two nights, demolition activities could carry into the following weekend of Aug. 9.
The $86.2 million project will rebuild the Ortega Highway bridge over I-5, construct a new northbound loop on-ramp, reconfigure the northern portion of Del Obispo Street leading to the bridge and improve the existing on- and off-ramps.
