OCTA’s biggest project, the I-405 Improvement Project, reached a major milestone recently as it passed the 80 percent completion mark and is on schedule to meet key construction milestones and open the 405 Express Lanes in late 2023.
In cooperation with Caltrans, OCTA is improving 16 miles of I-405 between SR-73 and I-605. The project will enhance mobility for different types of travel and includes 11 new bike lanes and sidewalks on bridges.
The project will also construct the 405 Express Lanes from SR-73 to I-605. The new express lanes – incorporating the existing carpool lanes and connectors that opened in 2014 – will allow carpoolers to ride for free, provide access for transit vehicles and give solo drivers the choice to speed up their commute for a toll.
As part of the I-405 Improvement Project, 18 bridge are being replaced or improved. More than half are fully open to traffic, including:
- Fairview Road
- Talbert Avenue
- Slater Avenue
- Bushard Street
- Magnolia Street
- Edinger Avenue
- McFadden Avenue
- Edwards Street
- Westminster Boulevard
- Bolsa Chica Road
By the end of the year, the second half of Goldenwest Street bridge will open and the Heil Avenue pedestrian bridge and one-stage Ward Street bridge are also expected to open.
