Hummingbirds and Other Designs Beautify I-405 Retaining Walls

Representations of hummingbirds and other natural elements grace retaining walls throughout the I-405 Improvement Project corridor, part of the Urban Garden theme that informs the aesthetic and landscape components of the project.

As part of the Project Aesthetics and Landscaping Master (PALM) Plan, OCTA and Caltrans worked with each city along the corridor to create wall aesthetic plans that reflected natural and beach motifs within Orange County. The Urban Garden theme was selected to bring into harmony the sometimes conflicting nature of the county’s natural environment and the urban development that now dominates.

Hummingbirds, the motif chosen by the City of Westminster, inhabit upland gardens and natural areas in the area. The wall art for this zone shows the birds among orchid flowers and leaves.
