Freeway Service Patrol Helps Motorists, Reduces Congestion

OCTA’s Freeway Service Patrol (FSP) plays a vital role in reducing freeway congestion and keeping motorists safe. This free service provides roadside assistance to drivers whose vehicles become disabled along local highways. Motorists can call 511 or use a freeway call box during operating hours to receive fast, reliable help.

FSP operators assist with common issues such as changing flat tires, jumpstarting batteries, providing a gallon of gas, and safely towing vehicles off the road. These quick interventions help prevent traffic delays and accidents, directly supporting OCTA’s mission to keep Orange County moving, safely and efficiently.

Beyond their core duties, FSP operators often go above and beyond to serve the community. When Chris, a tow operator, encountered a motorhome on fire, he quickly helped the family evacuate and even rescued their cat.

Jorge, an FSP operator, spotted a dog running through lanes of traffic on the 605 Freeway during rush hour. He managed to save the dog and reunite it with its owners, who had just been involved in a nearby accident earlier.

David, a tow operator working along the 5 Freeway, assisted a motorist in filling her gas tank. Sensing that something was wrong, he contacted CHP and helped identify the driver as a missing person with dementia, ultimately reuniting her with her family.

These extraordinary moments highlight the dedication, awareness, and compassion of OCTA’s FSP operators. Not only are they committed to OCTA’s mission of keeping Orange County moving, but they also keep the community safe and protect lives.
