Construction on the I-405 Improvement Project, which is improving a 16-mile stretch of the freeway between Costa Mesa and the Orange County border with Los Angeles County, continues to move forward with an anticipated completion date of 2023.
The project is adding one regular lane in each direction between Euclid Street to I-605, and a second lane in each direction in the center of the freeway from SR-73 to I-605 that will combine with the existing carpool lanes to form the 405 Express Lanes.
Begun in 2018, the project is more than 70 percent complete. Eight of 18 bridges scheduled for replacement are now complete and open to traffic, including:
- Slater Avenue - 2019
- Bushard Street - 2020
- McFadden Avenue - 2020
- Talbert Avenue – 2021
- Magnolia Street - 2021
- Edwards Street – 2021
- Edinger Avenue – 2021
- Bolsa Chica – 2021
In addition, all the remaining bridges are under construction. Learn more about the bridges here.
In 2021 OCTA conducted 11 virtual meetings, drawing an average of 250 participants each. These meetings continue to be an economical way to maximize outreach resources, efficiently respond to community questions in real time and highlight project activities that might impact residents and business owners.
