The proposed plans to improve the Santa Ana Freeway (I-5) in south Orange County are moving forward as OCTA CEO Darrell Johnson announced Caltrans advertised the first phase of the project for contract bids Monday, Aug. 19.
This is the first of three segments to be bid in the $275-million improvement project that will extend the carpool lane in both directions on the I-5 between Avenida Pico in San Clemente and San Juan Creek Road in San Juan Capistrano.
This segment of the project will include constructing carpool lanes, reconstructing ramps and structures and widening the freeway from south of the Pacific Coast Highway to San Juan Creek Road.
Caltrans plans to open bids Oct. 17, with funding coming from Measure M as well as from federal and state dollars. It is anticipated that construction will begin late 2013 or early 2014.
