Bridge Replacement Advances with San Juan Creek Railroad Bridge Removal

As part of the San Juan Creek Bridge Replacement Project, the 109-year-old railroad bridge over San Juan Creek is being demolished, marking another key milestone in OCTA’s efforts to enhance rail safety and reliability in Orange County.

Crews recently began the careful dismantling of the aging bridge, which had been in service since 1917. The work includes removing the tracks and bridge deck, followed by taking apart the main structure and its supports. With the old bridge gone, a new foundation and substructure will be built for a potential future bridge, should the need arise.

The first passenger trains crossed the new railroad bridge in late October 2025. The bridge will continue to serve Metrolink and Amtrak Pacific Surfliner passengers trains, as well as freight trains.

Funded by Measure M, Orange County’s half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements and through state and federal funds, the project will modernize rail while reducing long-term maintenance needs. Construction is expected to be completed in early 2027.
