Lon Hall parted ways with his last car nearly 40 years ago, saying adiós to his VW Bug when he moved to Mexico in 1978. By the time he moved back to the States, got a job, and bought a house in Irvine, the OCTA Bike Month contest winner had been without a car for 6 years and found it easy to get around without one. His house was only 2 miles from work, a quick 15-minute bike ride away. He continues to rely on his bike and public transporation to get around.
Hall has been exploring OC by bike for many years and says he knows “every trail, path, sidewalk, etc. for biking in Irvine, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Corona del Mar, Santa Ana, and Tustin.” His favorite OC bike ride is down the San Diego Creek bike trail, along the road at the base of East Bluff, and then through Newport Dunes to Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) at Bayside. He rides across the bridge and takes the OC Loop under PCH to get on the ocean side, then rides back to Bayside and rides the sidewalk to the bridge over to Balboa Island. He takes the ferry across to Balboa Peninsula, where there are a number of places he likes to eat lunch.
