Two local bike shops are offering classes to help residents ride more safely in Orange County. Designed to promote confidence and competence, these are the only classes approved by the League of American Bicyclists.
The Orange County Bicycle Coalition supports and promotes cyclist education through classroom classes and real-world experience “skills and drills” on the road. These classes are open to bicyclists of all abilities, age 14 and older.
During this nine-hour course, instructors will separate bicycle safety fact from fiction and teach real, proven, and effective behaviors to make cycling easier and less stressful. Basic mechanics and fitting are covered, too.
A typical evening’s three-hour presentation includes techniques to improve safety, traffic law, and traffic theory. The six-hour ride portion includes essential mechanics, riding skills and drills, a survey of street conditions and behavior, and a final exam.
The class is a two-day commitment, typically three hours Wednesday evening, and a six-hour Saturday. The $35 fee includes materials, insurance, and a written exam.
Classes will be held August 20 and 23 at Jax Bicycles in Irvine and September 10 and 13 in Huntington Beach.
