The West County Connectors (WCC) Project reached a major milestone on Oct. 11 when all three lanes opened on the connector between the southbound Interstate 405 (I-405) and eastbound State Route 22 (SR-22). For more than a year, commuters had been using only two lanes on this bridge.
Crews will now install permanent striping for the ultimate configuration of the southbound I-405 mainline, another step that brings the project closer to completion.
Started in 2010, the six-mile WCC Project will link the high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes/carpool lanes of three freeways – the I-405, SR-22, and Interstate 605 (I-605). The new connectors will improve traffic flow through the cities it traverses, including Garden Grove, Westminster, Seal Beach, Los Alamitos, Long Beach and the community of Rossmoor. Traffic on the I-405 near the border between Orange and Los Angeles counties averages approximately 370,000 vehicles each day, making it one of the busiest in the nation.
Crews are working diligently towards the anticipated opening of both HOV connectors by the end of the year. Learn more at octa.net/westcounty.
