Between the gatherings with family and friends, work potlucks and holiday-themed sweets, it can be a challenge to stay fit during the holidays. Finding time to exercise can be tricky, too. That’s why it’s the perfect time of year for commuting by bike. You’ll increase your fitness level, help the environment, save on car expenses and enjoy it much more than sitting in traffic.
There are over 1,000 miles of bikeways in Orange County, so chances are, there’s an accessible bikeway near your home or place of employment.
Get rolling with these tips:
Plan or ride your route BEFORE you start your commute.
Plan ahead to avoid lateness and undesirable routes. On weekends, test new routes. Time won’t be a factor and you may find a route that is more enjoyable even if it’s a little longer.
Manage your clothes.
Rolling your clothes helps them stay wrinkle free when you arrive at work. If your commute is more than a few miles, it’s best to bring a change of clothes. If you have storage space or a locker at work, leave a few different outfits there.
Check for bicycle storage.
Some employers will allow you to bring your bicycle inside, or may have special storage. Others may have outdoor bike racks. Be sure you’re prepared ahead of time.
Layer up.
This time of year, it can be chilly in the mornings, so be sure to bring clothes that you can layer. Remove them as you heat up. Waterproof fabrics will help keep you dry.
Gear up and learn how to fix a flat.
If you ride your bike enough, flats are inevitable. Learn how to fix a flat and be sure to bring the proper equipment such as a multi-tool, tire irons and a pump. Never ride at night without lights. Be sure to equip your bike with a front and rear light.
Carry your gear.
A rack with panniers or a basket are a great way to carry your gear without feeling like you are hauling extra weight. If you don’t have a basket or rack, backpacks or messenger bags work well.
Equip your bike.
Almost any bike is sufficient for commuting; just make sure it’s in good working order. During the winter, equipping your bike with fenders will help keep you clean.
Stay safe.
Always wear a helmet and equip your bike with lights. If you’re commuting home in the dark, high-visibility clothing and reflective gear helps others to see you and can help to avoid collisions. Know your rights and the rules of the road.
