The largest project in OCTA’s history, the I-405 Improvement Project will improve 16 miles of I-405 and add one regular lane in each direction from Euclid Street to I-605. It will also construct the 405 Express Lanes from SR-73 to I-605.
Following the I-405 Improvement Project groundbreaking in January, initial construction activities are now underway, including restriping and setting up concrete barriers to protect work areas during tree removal and grading. Other significant construction activities such as paving and bridge demolition are expected to begin in the fall.
Project construction will impact a total of 288 properties. To date, 167 right-of-way (ROW) acquisition agreements have been reached.
Kapsch TrafficCom was awarded the contract last month by the OCTA Board to provide toll-lane-system integration services for the design, installation, operation and maintenance of the electronic toll and traffic management system for both the 405 Express Lanes and 91 Express Lanes in Orange County. The 405 Express Lanes will consist of two lanes in each direction in the center of I-405, between Costa Mesa and the border with Los Angeles County.
Ongoing public outreach continues to inform communities within the project area about closures and other traffic information through face-to-face meetings, community events, open houses, and online and social media advertisements.
An interactive project map featuring closure and detour information will be synched with Waze, the free navigation app, to provide real-time traffic information. In addition, a mobile app is being developed to provide updated info on the go.
