South County Rail Improvements Will Be Underway Soon

OCTA and Metrolink are kicking off construction of the Laguna Niguel to San Juan Capistrano Passing Siding Project between the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Metrolink Station and Trabuco Creek in San Juan Capistrano.

The project will add approximately 1.8 miles of passing siding railroad track next to the existing track, allowing trains traveling in opposite directions to pass each other without stopping. This improvement will reduce the amount of wait time for trains, creating more reliable and efficient service along the Los Angeles – San Diego – San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) Corridor.

As part of the project, the private crossing from Camino Capistrano to Saddleback Rancho Capistrano will be improved, an existing spur track near the Metrolink Station will be relocated further south, and a maintenance personnel parking area will be constructed.

Construction activities are anticipated to begin soon and are scheduled to take place during the day, from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., though some weekend and nighttime construction will be required.

The $34.1 million project is funded by OC Go (also known as Measure M), Orange County’s half-cent sales tax to fund transportation investments, and state and federal funds. Construction is expected to be completed in early 2021.
