At the end of July, OCTA conducted a tour of the I-5 South County Improvements Project for the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Orange County Construction Institute.
This project will improve 6.5 miles of I-5 through Mission Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Hills, and Lake Forest and is targeted to be fully complete by early 2025.
Following a presentation at the field office, OCTA and ASCE representatives drove the entire corridor. Construction highlights included the challenge of coordinating large retaining walls with local residents, businesses and cities, relocating underground utilities and upgrading drainage systems.
Two stops along the way were made to point out engineering challenges and successes, including the improved Avery Parkway interchange and the Los Alisos bridge, currently being updated with expanded bike lanes and upgrades to the Aliso Creek Hiking trail.
