Service Animals and Their People Learn about Public Transportation

Twice a year, OC Bus goes to the dogs. And riders love it.

Each spring and fall, OCTA offers free training to help service animals become more familiar with public transportation. When these special companions are comfortable with the sounds, movement and layout of a bus or train, it increases the independence and confidence of their handlers.

Last month, more than 120 participants began their day at ARTIC Station, where they were encouraged to take unlimited rides on an OC Bus, including the sights and sounds of Downtown Disney District and Anaheim Garden Walk. One group expanded their training with a journey to San Juan Capistrano on a Metrolink train.

Based on trainer feedback, the event has grown from once to twice a year. Service animals are usually in training for about six months, so offering it twice a year affords every animal a chance to attend. OCTA is one of the only public transportation agencies in the area to offer a program like this.
