Regional Bikeways Planning Rolls Forward into District 5

The region’s bikeways are improving thanks to collaboration among OCTA, the Orange County Council of Governments, local jurisdictions and bicycle stakeholders as they build consensus on key bikeways corridors and develop projects.

Regional Bikeways Planning is an expansion of OCTA’s Commuter Bikeways Strategic Plan.  The planning process is initiated and coordinated by OCTA and local jurisdictions to bring projects from concept to completion.

Already, 21 potential regional bikeway corridors have been defined in Supervisorial Districts 1, 2 and 4, which include areas in northern and western Orange County. The main objective is to support local efforts to implement bicycling improvements. Proposed improvements focus on closing gaps, enhancing existing bikeways and connecting across city boundaries to key locations such as major employment areas, transportation centers and schools.

The process for regional bikeway planning in Orange County began in 2011 as a pilot effort for Supervisorial District 4. Following its success, a series of similar collaborative efforts now continues throughout each of the districts.  This past year, the Bikeways Strategy for Districts 1 and 2 was finalized and is now available online at www.octa.net/bikeways.

Planning for south Orange County in District 5 is currently underway. Take the south Orange County survey to tell us about your bicycling experiences at www.octa.net/D5bikesurvey.
