The Ortega Highway project will improve local traffic flow and ease regional commutes around San Juan Capistrano. On Nov. 3, crews closed and began reconfiguring Ortega Highway between the southbound freeway ramps and Del Obispo. Ortega Highway between Del Obispo and El Camino Real followed on Nov. 5. The areas are expected to reopen in late November and early December, respectively, along with the southbound Interstate 5 (I-5) on ramp.
The closure of Ortega Highway will limit direct access to historic downtown San Juan Capistrano. Motorists can use Junipero Serra Road or San Juan Creek Road/Camino Capistrano to get to downtown businesses and restaurants.
The construction is part of the I-5 / Ortega Highway Interchange Improvement Project and is designed to relieve traffic congestion at this extremely busy junction.
