On the 91 Express Lanes, Violation Enforcement Lights Are A Bright Idea

OCTA recently installed an innovative lighting system on the 91 Express Lanes that will help with safety and congestion. Mounted high above in the gantries, the lights allow the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to quickly identify vehicles traveling through the toll lanes without a working transponder. When a signal is not received, the lights flash. The new system is designed to deter motorists from unlawfully entering the 91 Express Lanes.

The lights streamline toll regulation by visually alerting the CHP to transponder issues. When the lights flash, officers receive an initial signal that a vehicle may require attention. They look at the car in question and see if it has a transponder. If it does, they don’t stop it.

To use their transponders effectively, motorists should review the instructions that accompany the devices. In accordance with the California Vehicle Code, transponders may only be mounted to the lower left-hand side or right-hand side of the windshield or behind the rear view mirror where they will not obstruct sight while driving. The law requires transponders to be visible through the front windshield.

The CHP polices the 91 Express Lanes and provides safety and service, including patrolling for disabled motorists and road hazards. The CHP helps ensure efficient traffic movement by reducing the number of traffic collisions and injuries.
