OCTA Keeps Community Informed about I-5 South County Improvement Project

Work has begun on the final segment of the I-5 South County Improvement Project, which stretches from San Clemente to San Juan Capistrano.

To bring the community up to speed on the latest developments, on Feb. 18 OCTA held the second Stakeholder Working Group meeting for the I-5 South County Improvement Project. This group is composed of local elected officials and staff, business leaders, local school representatives, emergency services personnel and representatives from a variety of community groups.

OCTA shared project information including Avenido Pico construction staging and outreach strategies to ensure the community is aware of construction activities.

The $230 million widening project will add a carpool lane in each direction between Avenida Pico and San Juan Creek Road. In addition, Avenida Pico is being widened to provide dual left-turn lanes to both northbound and southbound Avenida Pico on-ramps.

Crews have been clearing vegetation along the southbound Avenida Pico on- and off-ramps in anticipation of reconstructing the interchange.

During the next two months, the center median will be removed and traffic will be shifted to the east to prepare the Avenida Pico bridge for the first stage of demolition.
