Several OCTA staff members, in partnership with the OC Streetcar’s project design consultant HNTB, participated in the 12th Annual Orange County Canstruction Design-Build Competition.
Canstruction is a competition where local architectural, engineering, planning, and design firms create structures out of canned food. The installations were built in late August and are available for public view throughout September at South Coast Plaza, John Wayne Airport, and Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC). When the viewing period is over, the structures are taken apart and the cans are donated to feed the hungry.
Working throughout the night at South Coast Plaza, the team built a representation of an OC Streetcar using 5,000 food cans. The structure received an honorable mention during the Canstruction awards ceremony.
OC Streetcar is the first modern streetcar project to be built in Orange County and will serve Santa Ana’s historic and thriving downtown, which includes federal, state and local courthouses, government offices, colleges, an artists’ village. Expected to begin carrying passengers in 2022, it will operate along a 4.15-mile route that connects the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center (SARTC) and a new transit hub at Harbor Boulevard and Westminster Avenue in Garden Grove.
