More than 60 city staff members, advocates, and community representatives gathered in Irvine on Sept. 10 to discuss regional bikeways in the Orange County Foothills, which includes the Supervisorial District 3 cities of Irvine, Tustin, Orange, Villa Park, Yorba Linda and segments of Anaheim.
OCTA Board Chairman Jeffrey Lalloway, also mayor pro tem of Irvine, Director Al Murray, councilman of Tustin, and Director Todd Spitzer, also the 3rd district supervisor, led a roundtable discussion on advancing regional bikeway projects and creating a safer bicycling community.
OCTA staff presented 11 potential corridor options and discussed the attributes of each in detail. Following the presentation, the audience provided positive feedback. The open dialogue among elected officials, agency staff and the public touched on the importance of interagency coordination and opportunities to fund the project through federal, state and local sources. Public feedback is a vital part of the planning process and helps shape the final report.
OCTA’s main role is to promote the regional bikeways vision and to maintain momentum throughout the planning process. City agencies are responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the bikeways. Materials used in the presentation may be found here.
The current bikeways study is part of the larger, countywide Regional Bikeways Collaborative. The Regional Bikeways Collaborative has been ongoing since 2011 and is segmented by supervisorial district. The OC Foothills is the final study area.
The study report will be finalized and presented to the OCTA Board of Directors in December.
