Opened on December 1, the 405 Express Lanes provides a new, reliable commute option for those who travel between SR-73 in Costa Mesa and I-605 at the Orange County border with Los Angeles County.
The 405 Express Lanes includes two lanes in each direction in the center of the freeway. Vehicles are required to have a FasTrak® transponder and a valid account with any toll agency in California to enter the 405 Express Lanes, which will provide drivers with a safe, reliable commute, while maximizing the number of cars that travel at free-flow speeds.
The 405 Express Lanes website offers information about the new lanes and provides an opportunity to sign up for an account. Those who have a FasTrak® transponder can use it on the 405 Express Lanes and with any toll agency in California. The 405 Express Lanes exchanges information with other toll operators within the state to provide seamless travel with a single account.
To take advantage of the free or discounted tolls for carpoolers on the 405 Express Lanes, however, drivers must have a switchable FasTrak transponder; these are available for purchase at the website. Carpools with two occupants drive for free during non-peak hours for the first 3 ½ years after the Express Lanes opens. Carpools with three or more occupants drive for free during all hours.
