More Than 1,200 Enter OCTA’s Bus Safety Contest

A contest designed to educate both new and experienced riders about bus safety attracted more than 1,200 participants between December 2013 and January 2014. Called “Be A Safety Hero!”, the integrated program included a series of videos, contests and social media messaging devoted to this important topic.

The engaging safety promotion substantially boosted OCTA’s activity on social media as well. Social media posts supporting the campaign included safety tips, videos, winner announcements and more.

Using cartoon-style graphics and upbeat messaging, “Be A Safety Hero!” encouraged riders to watch four short bus safety videos and take a quiz. Produced by the OCTA Digital Communications team, the videos featured bus safety topics in terms of boarding, riding, riding with special needs, and exiting.

Participants answered safety questions such as, “Should you stand behind or in front of the yellow line?” and “Is it O.K. to stand if a seat is available?” more than 11,000 times. Their responses were entered into a drawing that randomly awarded one 30-day bus pass each week through Jan. 31.
