For more than 20 years, the 91 Express Lanes has helped people connect with life’s most important moments. Each year, motorists take nearly 13 million trips on this 10-mile stretch of road in the median of SR-91 between Orange and Riverside counties.
To continue delivering a smooth, safe journey at free-flowing speed, beginning September 9 OCTA and Caltrans will repave the entire 91 Express Lanes from the SR-55 freeway in Anaheim to the Orange County/Riverside County line.
Branded “The 91 Weekend Shift”, repaving is scheduled to occur over 10 consecutive weekends, five weekends in each direction. One direction will be paved at a time, beginning with the eastbound direction. Once that is completed, crews will tackle the westbound portion. To maximize safety, reduce the impact on motorists, and accelerate repaving, the 91 Express Lanes and sections of the SR-91 #1 general-purpose lane are tentatively scheduled for closure on consecutive weekends between September 9 and November 21. During that time, significant traffic congestion and extended delays on SR-91 are anticipated. To get to your destination on time, avoid the SR-91 between SR-55 and SR-71 and opt for alternate routes like the SR-60, I-10, SR-57, and SR-71. Consider taking Metrolink, vanpooling, or ridesharing. Contact OC Vanpool Specialist Kristopher Hewkin at khewkin@octa.net or (714) 560-5331 for help finding existing vanpools and setting up new ones.
Paid for entirely by the 91 Express Lanes Capital Reserve Fund, the 91 Express Lanes pavement project will extend the pavement’s lifespan for decades while continuing to provide a safe, smooth commute.
